Every photo a digital camera or smartphone takes carries a block of metadata alongside the image itself — EXIF data — recording details about how and when it was captured. Most of it is harmless housekeeping. Some of it is more revealing than people expect before they share a photo publicly.
What's actually in there
Standard EXIF fields include the camera or phone model, the exact date and time the photo was taken, exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), and — if location services were enabled at the time — the precise GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. That last field is the one that matters most for privacy: a photo posted publicly can expose a home address or daily location pattern without anyone intending to share that.
Checking what a photo is carrying
- Open the EXIF Viewer and drop in the photo.
- Review the fields it reads out, including GPS coordinates if present.
- Use the strip option to download a clean copy with the metadata removed.
Why some platforms strip it automatically and others don't
Most major social platforms strip EXIF data on upload as a standard privacy measure, which is why a photo downloaded from social media usually carries no metadata at all. Email attachments, cloud storage links, and direct file transfers typically don't strip anything — the original file, GPS coordinates included, goes wherever it's sent.
The simplest way to strip it without a dedicated tool
Since re-encoding a photo builds a new file from scratch, running it through any tool that redraws the image — the image compressor or image resizer, for instance — drops the original EXIF block as a side effect, even without an explicit "remove metadata" step.
